This monster would have been perfect for the five year old me because my favorite colors were red and blue. Another thing I like when I was little was toys that had interesting features, shapes and sizes. The creature I made has wings and i was amazed by flying when I was little.
Ricardo Santos, Graphic Designer
Final Project: Jack Lasinski
Cars, crayons and colors formed the design passion of the young graphic designer Ricardo Santos. Born in Portugal, Ricardo started drawing what he draws best at a young age, cars. When he was in school he would scribble cars in the pages of his notebooks. Ricardo’s enthusiasm for cars has not faded as he continues to perfect the art of car focused graphic design.
He started his career by publishing his cars first in newspapers, then in magazines. Soon enough his work was on the cover of RACER magazine. He now works for Turbo magazine and publishes beautiful works of classic, racing, and sport cars.
In his work it's impossible not to notice the thought and attention to detail. He really understands the curves of the cars he draws. One of the many stunning features of Ricardo’s work is the way he catches shadows on the car. With the shadows the car look 3 dimensional and almost move on the page. Almost all of Ricardo's work includes movement, the way the lines are going and the rate of which they get bigger tells you the speed of the car.
At first glance, Ricardo's work looks like a simply drawn car, but the color and movement in and around the car attracts viewers towards his work where they can get lost in the attention to details and precise line. Every bumper sticker, every screw and every edge are drawn with care. While looking into Ricardo's work you can see how much time and effort is put into creating the best looking outcome. Ricardo says “I try to focus on the shape, the shadows, glows and colors of the cars to create simple but eye catching images”.
The colors in Ricardo’s work make the art even more appealing. He uses very few colors. His color palette for each project is small but the way he uses the color to contrast each other and make everything look like it is flowing seamlessly together is elegant. Most of the colors Ricardo uses are bright and vibrant but go together almost too perfectly.
There is much to admire in Ricardo’s work. He captures the curve of the cars down to the last point. His attention to detail is masterful and his colors are vibrant. Overall Ricardo's design strategies, colors, shadows and movement work together to make the perfect car.
